The snakes shed their losing skin

Quick post-election round up, and what a skin shedding for the snakes in Canberra has it been.

First up, WorkChoices:

Former workplace relations minister Joe Hockey has come out and said that the WorkChoices legislation went too far and should have been amended prior to the election.

"The problem with WorkChoices was we just went too deep, it was a mistake" - Link

Nice backtrack, but you were prepared to implement them as they stood if you had won the election Joe? You were running for parliament on a platform that you secretly believed was deeply flawed? Hypocritical bastard.

Next up, Aboriginal reconciliation;

Malcolm Turnbull has come out and said that Howard should have apologised to the stolen generation.

"Clearly we should have said sorry then… Unquestionably that was an error I'd say, about a friend, John Howard.” - Link

I’m sure it’s the same on both sides of our politically-centre two-party system, but it does serve as a reminder just how untrustworthy these bastards are. I could easily imagine, in the wake of a Labor defeat, a newly freed Garrett saying he disagreed with the Tassie pulp mill and tried to council Rudd about it. Toe the party line, until it has been proven to fail, then say you believed in the opposite, but were unable to express it.

I trust them as far as I could throw them, which, given the new slimmer Labor team, has just increased a good two feet.

  • Any comment on the fresh Labor front bench? Or have we had enough fed politics for a while?

  • As discussed, i think you're being a bit horsh here.

Didn't you see what happened when it was 'leaked' that MT wanted to ratify Kyoto? But it does go to show that not everyone in the party is in agreement on everything. They can disagree(behind closed doors) but at the end of the day, they need to tow the party line. Particularly around election time. You're being unrealistic if you expect anything else.

  • I understand that the party line and party unity are important, especially around election time, so maybe I am being unrealistic, but that still doesn't make it right for Hockey to be pushing a policy (as minister for it) that he disagrees with. He is by definition a hipocrite, and was up there on Sunrise every few week lying to the nation.

Just because it's the norm doesn't mean we shouldn't call them on it. I think most politicians are lying bastards, and to excuse that behaviour by saying 'both sides do it', 'the opposition would be just as bad' is just giving them a green light to continue.

If we sat Hockey down in front of a TV with edited clips of him speaking during the campaign and highlighted everywhere he was lying when he said WorkChoices would be fair or whatever, and he was shown to be a big fibber, and it hurt him badly when he next tried to get elected, then maybe next time another polie would act differently.

OK, probably not. But surely we can at least point out dishonest behaviour when we see it.

  • The new Labor front bench? They're a fresh faced young team with everything to prove.

Gillard better not have booked any holidays for the next three years 'cos she's going to be busy as a Japanese beaver with her portfolio.

Lot's of newies who will be running around for the first few months going 'holy fuck I'm a minister'. Can't wait to see the first scandal break when they find themselves facing Tony Jones and it hits them they're in the big leagues now.

  • So why did Garrett lose Climate Change? I didn't get the reasons for his demotion from where I'm viewing things...

  • He did fuck up with his "short jocular conversation" with a journo where he said that Labor were compromising only to win the election and when they get in they will just change everything.

He said it was just jokes but he copped a lot of crap over that, and it showed him as the inexperienced politician that he is. He also fucked up talking about Kyoto and Rudd had to publicly correct him.

He's still minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, but yeah, it looks like he got a bit of a smack from Rudd.
